Cana Island Lighthouse - Book

The Cana Island Lighthouse is one of the most picturesque of any lighthouses still operating on the Great Lakes today. The beautiful peninsula of Door County has a long and bountiful tradition of maritime history, including its many lighthouses such as Cana Islands. Cana Island has illuminated the coastline on the Lake Michigan side of Door County for over 100 years. Cana Island’s lighthouse story involves bricks and mortar, engineering marvels, and, most noteworthy, people. The dedication of Cana’s lighthouse keepers and their families over the years was remarkable. Countless mariners relied on them. Lighthouse life could be challenging, at times tedious, but also extremely rewarding. Most visitors will agree that Cana Island is indeed an extraordinary place.

Ken and Barb Wardius entered the world and grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Their high school romance was destined to last, for they have been married for twenty-six years. When they married, Barb had just graduated from secretarial school and Ken was studying biology at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. They pursued their careers and several years later their daughter, Sarah, came along. Ken and Barb have traveled statewide and nationally, pursuing their hobbies of photography, reading, hiking, bird study, and in recent years, lighthouses, which first drew their interest in picturesque Door County. They began accumulating photos of lighthouses, then actively searching them out, climbing them and writing their stories, willingly assisted by the people they met along the way. Finally, they were encouraged by their friends to share it all in a book. Two years in the making, this collection of photos and facts attests to both their dedication and their photographic ability. Wisconsin Lighthouses: A Photographic & Historical Guide By Ken and Barb Wardius This guide treats the reader to 48 of the state's lighthouses on Lakes Superior, Michigan, and Winnebago, and on Green Bay. Included are some of the best known lighthouses--Cana Island, LaPointe, Fond du Lac, Potawatomie Lighthouse on Rock Island, Old Port Washington Light Station--and some lesser known lighthouses that might have escaped the notice of even inveterate lighthouse hunters. For each lighthouse, the authors provide one or more photographs in full color, as well as its history, including date of completion, construction details, and changes incurred over the years. They also provide up-to-date visiting information. The authors include a general history of lighthouses in Wisconsin, lightships and tenders, a glossary of terms, a list of lighthouse agencies, and sources of further information including many web sites. They outline the history of lenses and fueling methods, duties of the lightkeeper, and discuss the future of lighthouses in the state. They warn that many of our historic lighthouses, unused and abandoned, are falling into serious disrepair, and that greater pubic awareness and action will be necessary to save them.
