Please let Ruby Walton know I like her book(Hopscotch, Hobos & Foxholes) very much. I grew up in Avalon, Wi, went to grade school with the Tracy children and have great memories of working with her husband, Ted, hoeing test plots in northern Wisconsin.

The tales in this book were written by members of my writing classes held in Janesville, Wisconsin. As class members read aloud their captivating recollections, I thought, "What a shame not to share them." From this inspiration, I am proud to present Hopscotch, Hobos and Foxholes, a kaleidoscope of true stories. Subjects range from games they played when young through hardships of the 1930's Great Depression and World War II. Writers remember details related by their parents, home remedies administered by loving mothers, living in a war-torn country, fighting in World War II and much, much more. Backgrounds of authors vary widely. Some have always lived in Janesville. Others spent their childhood elsewhere, on farms and in cities, in the U.S. and abroad. All are true chronicles of each person's experiences. You won't want to miss the World War II articles. They reveal not only the travails of soldiers in battle but also those of persons living in Germany during the war. We hope these stories will bring back memories to older people and fascinate younger ones as they read about life in the first half of the Twentieth Century. Enjoy!
