The Wisconsin River: An Odyssey Through Time and Space - Book

Read in this official Sesquicentennial book about many of the fascinating historical events, people and places that were associated with the Wisconsin River in the nineteenth century. These are described county by county from the river's headwater at Lac Vieux Desert in Vilas County to its confluence with the Mississippi River. Each of the eleven chapters contains historical photographs and a current, local map that includes mileage, portages and access points. Additionally, there are twenty-four vignettes scattered throughout the book with titles such as rafting lumber, early travelers and steamboats that summarize their relationship to the river. Meticulously researched, most all the material presented has never before been brought together.

Richard Durbin is an Emeritus Professor from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California-Berkeley in 1957. Following a National Science Foundation Postdoctorate, he went to the University of Minnesota-St. Paul. Four years later, he transferred to Wisconsin. His career included, besides teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, authorship of about 250 original scientific papers, which include 31 books or parts of books. He also served as Editor-in-Chief of the journal Molecular Host-Parasite Interactions, for five years. Since retirement, Durbin has authored 9 historical publications that have appeared in Wisconsin Magazine of History, Wisconsin Academy Review, Wisconsin River Valley Journal, Voyageur, and Wisconsin Trails. This book, The Wisconsin River, is an outgrowth of Rick's interest in regional history combined with his love of the out-of-doors, especially wilderness canoeing. It is also the first title published by his recently established Spring Freshet Press, whose specialty is publishing Midwest history.
