Owen J. Gromme was born in 1896 and was raised in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. He worked as curator of birds and mammals for more than forty years at the Milwaukee Public Museum. Gromme began Birds of Wisconsin in 1941 and finally published the book in 1963. It has become a must for bird lovers everywhere. Nationally recognized as a pioneer in conservation and wildlife art, Gromme received numerous awards and honors during his lifetime. He painted the 1945 federal duck stamp and the first Wisconsin duck stamp in 1978. Owen Gromme died in 1991.
