Milwaukee Then and Now - Book

Milwaukee Then and Now is a history of Wisconsin's largest city including landmarks as they once looked alongside the same viewpoint photographed today. The name Milwaukee means gathering place by the water and comes from the Native Americans who first populated the area on the shores of Lake Michigan. Founded in the 1840's by merchants, the town soon became a thriving trade center attracting prosperous New England businessmen seeking new opportunities. German immigrants began to arrive in the late 19th century and the city developed a strong German influence. Landmarks like City Hall, Chapman's Department Store, Pfister Hotel, Milwaukee Railroad Depot, Milwaukee Art Museum, Pabst Brewery and Mansion, and many others are explored in this interesting book by Sandra Ackerman.
