Mayhew Mosaics

I always knew I was destined to create mosaics, as if I made them in a "pervious life". Over the years I bought several books on making mosaics. But, I never took the first step to make one myself. Not until, I got the idea of combining my love of flea markets and junk stores with my desire to create mosaics. My first mosaic was created by arranging skeleton keys, rocks, tiles, garden tools, a wine opener, a jack knife, yarn dowels, and one extra large wooden spoon in an antique type set drawer. This made for the most unusual picture that still hangs in my dinning room. Now I see a potential mosaic in my mind wherever I go. I tease my family members telling them "If you stand still long enough I will mosaic you".

My "Garden Mosaics" have brought me a side business that I had no idea was going to be part of my life. It started with me purchasing a cement turtle and covering it with broken dishes for a Mother's Day present. That was dozens of turtles ago. I had no idea how much my Garden turtles and frogs would delight my friends and family. My most memorable turtle was a large 30 pound one that I donated to a "turtle auction" to beautify Beloit's Riverfront. The wining bidder paid $650 for my turtle bringing in the most for any turtle donated.

Recently, because of the volume of my orders, I persuaded (ok tricked) my sister-in-law, Kathy Byers into lending a hand. She is a true artist in her own right and a fellow "junker". She has created the most unbelievable work. I am in awe of her creations. The medium we use to create our mosaics includes: broken dishes, glass, tiles, jewelry, rocks, buttons, and stained glass. Every mosaic is individually handcrafted. Each one is a unique design. No two pieces are alike. Other Mosaics we have to sell include bird houses, stepping stones, Chinese lanterns, planters, and table centerpieces.

I hope you enjoy our recycled turtles and frogs. If you have your own sentimental "junk", we take special orders! Enjoy!!

Thanks for checking out Mayhew Mosaics, Nancy Mayhew
