Portage
County Historical Society
Since
1952 the Portage County Historical Society has been helping to preserve
Portage County's history.
The
mission statement of the Society is: "The purposes of this organization
are exclusively educational and shall be to preserve, advance, and disseminate
knowledge of this history of Portage County, Wisconsin."
Aside
from publishing books, the Society has an extensive website and archives.
The Society runs three historical sites; the Beth Israel Synagogue Museum
on Water St. in Stevens Point, the Rising Star Mill in Nelsonville and
Heritage Park in Plover.

This book,
written by Michael Goc, chronicles the development of the Portage County
community, from the arrival of its first settlers in 1857 to the present.
It tells how a hard-working people made a home for themselves and created
for their children a new Native Realm.
