Crossing the Driftless, A Canoe Trip Through a Midwestern Landscape, is both a traveler's tale and an exploration of parts of Wisconsin and Minnesota. The Driftless Area is the land the glaciers missed, an ancient landscape of bluffs, ridgetops, and steep valleys that was seabed long ago. Covering much of southwestern Wisconsin, its contours were carved from bedrock by many rivers. Author Lynne Diebel and her husband crossed the Driftless Area by canoe, journeying 359 river miles from Fairbault, Minnesota to Stoughton, Wisconsin. Traveling by river and portage, they paddled downstream on the Cannon and Mississippi rivers and upstream on the Wisconsin river. This book is an account of their trip, but also a story of the waterways they canoed and passed.
