Jack May was born and raised on a farm in Mineral Point, Wisconsin. After attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he worked for several years as a beef herdsman for the University in the late 1950s. His corporate career began in 1960 when he joined Kent Feeds where he moved up through the ranks, becoming President in 1994. Much of his work with Kent Feeds involved working with 4-H and Future Farmers of America (FFA). He served on numerous boards and organizations and was awarded FFA's highest award, the Honorary American Farmer Degree in 1998. Retired since 2002, Jack continues to support 4-H and FFA and donates a portion of the proceeds from his books to these organizations.
