The Nightingale Moon is the story of two boys who meet at the end of the American Civil War and quickly bond over their love of card games. The main characters are an orphaned Native American boy and an Easterner searching for his missing older brother. They enter a Hearts tournament on a Mississippi River steamboat and cross paths with several colorful characters including Wild Bill Hickok and Mark Twain. Their adventures continue as they traverse the bayou and lead an escaped slave to safety along an old Underground Railroad route. The Nightingale Moon by Nicholas Sweedo is a great mystery book for youth age 8-12.
